To Prune or Not to Prune? That Is the Question

When driving through any lovely neighborhood, the splendor of trees and shrubs is often the feature people notice first. Eye-catching trees are associated with beauty and serenity -- shade and privacy -- with a sense of well-being. Shrubs, too, hold universal appeal. Together, trees and shrubs add much to the look and value of a property, a street, a community.

Like all worthwhile investments, however, they need regular care and attention. Clients often turn to Ideal Landscaping for help. I'm frequently asked, "How often should I water my trees and how much?" and "When should my trees and shrubs be pruned?" My answers vary depending on the specific variety, age and location of a given tree or shrub. While I cannot give specifics here, I can offer a few general observations:
  • It's best to select only trees and shrubs that fit the available space once they mature.
  • To shape a tree or shrub, some pruning may be suggested at the time of planting.
  • Removing dead, dying, or diseased wood helps to maintain the health of a tree.
  • Pruning a fruit tree can improve the quality and size of its flowers, fruit and foliage.
  • Evergreen shrubs and trees typically need a small amount of careful pruning annually
  • Typically evergreens used in hedges and ornamental garden designs and topiary can be pruned almost any time of the year.
  • Boxwood and holly should not be pruned late in the year because tender, new growth can be damaged in northern winters.
While these basic observations may show some reasons why pruning is important and when it should be done, they are only examples. It's usually best to leave it to the experts. Call me today for a free consultation.
